Plant Disease Detection Diagnostics

Determining manufacturing potential for innovative plant disease detection methods

Dr. Dr. Qingshan Wei and Dr. Mingzhuo Li have developed a Microneedle patch that penetrates and sticks to the abaxial side of a plant leaf, collecting DNA, RNA, and proteins for the detection of volatile organic compounds that implicate the presence of diseases in crops. This takes away the need to carry out extensive purification procedures currently necessary for disease detection. Through this review, the MMB team was able to define the manufacturing potential of the product, identify opportunities for collaboration and funding-assistance, and track the presence and pricing of competition.
